ABOUT THE ORGANISATION Tropicana Community Services, a Toronto-based multiservice organization, provides all youth, newcomers, people of Black and Caribbean heritage and others in need with opportunities and alternatives that lead to success and positive life choices.  Our mission is achieved through culturally appropriate programs such as counselling, childcare, educational, and employment services and youth development.

ABOUT THE POSITION We are looking for volunteer tutors for the Increase Your Success (IYS) tutoring program of our Youth Development and Education Department. The successful candidate will facilitate the academic success of the students through a variety of creative tutoring techniques. In this role, to aid the students in their further education and personal lives, the tutor will provide quality learning support to students in Grades 1-12 in mathematics, language, science, etc.


  • Support students from Grades 1-12 with accessible resources and tools in a one-on-one setting
  • Conduct a pre-assessment for each student to determine a specific learning plan tailored to their readiness, interest levels, and learning styles.
  • Provide students with individual attention and recognize their work to fulfill their potential
  • Grant students the flexibility to learn at their own pace while adhering to their learning plans
  • Pay attention to students’ weak areas/subjects throughout learning and help with the improvement plan
  • Help students build self-confidence and self-respect and keep them engaged in various learning plans
  • Teach students effective study and time management techniques to further aid them in their educational goals
  • Help with school assigned homework and projects to keep up with the studying schedules of the students   
  • Provide one-on-one tutoring via Zoom or other virtual platforms



  • Must have minimum post-secondary education(or in the process of completion)
  • Strong knowledge in mathematics, language, science, etc.

Work Experience

  • 0-1 years of tutoring experience in mathematics, language, and science preferred 
  • Knowledge and experience with a non-profit organization is an asset

Language & Communication Skills

  • Strong communication skills in English, both oral and written
  • Good presentation skills

Transferable Skills

  • A self-starter who is honest, analytical, organized, and detail-oriented
  • Ability to tutor via virtual platforms, Zoom in specific  
  • Ability to respect and value diversity and inclusion
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of the organization
  • Ability to prioritize task, multitask, and work in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to retain patience when supporting students


  • Work Remotely 


  • Three 10-week terms (2021-2022):
  • The week of October 11 to the week of December 13
  • The week of January 3 to the week of March 7
  • The week of March 21 to the week of May 23
  • 2 hours/week, 20 sessions/term, every Tuesday and Thursday from 4pm to 5 pm
